Avicennia germinans is a tree that grows naturally in saline environments from the southeastern United States to South America and from western tropical Africa to Angola. The seeds have average dimensions of 22.03 ± 2.73 mm in length, 9.09 ± 1.08 mm in width, and 16.49 ± 2.84 mm in thickness, with a fresh mass of 1.70 ± 0.68 g and a moisture content of 59.52 ± 1.53 %. The embryo is folded and does not exhibit dormancy; the seeds are semi-viviparous or viviparous. Germination is photoblastic indifferent, and the optimum germination temperature is 25/40 °C. The seeds are highly sensitive to dehydration (recalcitrant); therefore, they cannot be stored and must be sown immediately after harvesting to avoid loss of viability.
