Chrysobalanus icaco is a tree or shrub that occurs naturally from Florida to eastern Brazil and from western Tropical Africa to Zambia. Its fruits are edible drupes. The seeds have average dimensions of 21.32 ± 1.89 mm in length, 12.28 ± 0.91 mm in width, and 14.70 ± 1.31 mm in thickness, with a fresh mass of 1.45 ± 0.26 g and a moisture content of 10.9 ± 0.80 %. The embryo is spatulate and exhibits physiological dormancy. Germination is photoblastic indifferent, and the optimum germination temperature is 25/30 °C. Although the species has been classified as recalcitrant, a moisture content below 15 % suggests some tolerance to dehydration; however, the length of time seeds can be stored without losing viability remains unknown.
