Magnolia virginiana is a tree native to the United States and Cuba, whose fruits are polyfollicles producing 7-25 seeds per fruit. Seeds measure 6.87 ± 0.79 mm in length, 5.90 ± 1.04 mm in width, and 3.27 ± 0.41 mm in thickness, with a moisture content of 8.62 ± 0.55 %, and possess a subdeveloped spatulate embryo. Within the same seed lot, seeds with morphological and morphophysiological dormancy coexist; germination is photoblastic indifferent, with an optimal temperature range of 25/30 °C and a positive response to moist stratification. Seeds from Cuban populations rapidly lose viability within a few weeks after collection, especially if the sarcotesta is not removed.
