Stenocereus heptagonus, seed propagation sheet

Abstract

Stenocereus heptagonus is a succulent, candelabriform tree endemic to Cuba. Its fruits are cactidia that produce about 700 seeds. The seeds measure 1.94 ± 0.12 mm in length, 1.54 ± 0.09 mm in width, and 0.96 ± 0.04 mm in thickness, with a moisture content of 8.01 ± 1.97 %, and possess a bent, peripheral embryo. Within the same batch, photoblastic seeds with physiological dormancy and non-dormant seeds coexist, exhibiting an optimal temperature range of 25 °C to 25/30 °C and a positive response to chemical scarification. The seeds can be stored at room temperature for up to two years without losing viability.
